Callum Wilson bagged a brace as Coventry City moved onto plus points with a 2-0 win over Colchester United.

A quiet week for the Sky Blues for once ended with a League One game against Colchester United at Sixfields Stadium.

It was a wet old afternoon prior to kick off and not one for a picnic on the hill and there was rather more sheltering from the rain inside the ground than those on the hill.

Micky Adams, Marcus Hall, Micky Gynn, Phil Parkinson, Tim Flowers, Martin Allen and Barry Fry were amongst the onlookers as City took to the pitch with Blair Adams back in for Ryan Haynes from the team that had drawn against Shrewsbury eight days ago.

Colchester turned up with a squad that was down to the bare bones and had Clinton Morrison on the bench but they started better with Andy Webster having to clear one early attack.

In the seventh minute, Cyrus Christie who is attracting interest from AFC Bournemouth, crossed for Callum Wilson to get in a header at Sam Walker in the United goal.

Christie fired wide of Walker's post three minutes later and then provided a good cross for Leon Clarke to get in a shot which Walker beat away one handedly.

The attacks continued with Christie finding Clarke who struck Walker's left hand post and Christie firing at Walker from a Moussa.

In the 17th minute, the visitors won a corner, which Alex Gibey headed.

After the U's were forced into a change, a good move saw Carl Baker, who had spent some of his Saturday visiting people battling with cancer, play in Clarke for a shot which went wide.

Leon Clark sent one just over in the 22nd minute and five minutes later, a great ball from Fleck won a corner. Moussa, who was getting taunted by the small band of visiting fans, in the lowest crowd ever to watch a City league game, won another corner.

That came to nothing but on the half hour mark, Leon Clarke got free on the left and thumped a shot, which deflected off Spence and onto the crossbar.

In the 35th minute, Gilbey fired over. City went up the other end and birthday boy Blair Adams ran and hit a great shot that Walker got down to but could push the ball into the path of Callum Wilson who lashed it into the net from eight yards.

It was a goal that City had deserved for the pressure. Fleck fired in a 41st minute shot which Walker spilt as the siege to the U's goal continued with Christie setting up Moussa for a header wide

Colchester brought former City striker Clinton Morrison on for the second half which was delayed until Sam Walker had fixed the net as the person in a white hoodie who had been dispatched was not tall enough.

The U's won a 50th minute corner that went all the way back to the keeper and won another a minute later as did City through Wilson in the 55th minute.

Three minutes later, City went two goals up when a lovely weighted ball after good work by Adams and Fleck saw the ball out to Callum Wilson on the right and he rounded Walker and into the net.

Webster got in a good header from a corner taken by Blair Adams and Spence gave City another corner. In the 71st minute, more good play from Leon Clarke against the team in all white saw a corner at The Hill end.

Moussa put in another great run and fired off a shot which Walker got down to and in the 77th minute, Walker pulled off a brilliant save to stop a Clarke head from a sublime Christie cross.

Baker fired over from distance before he left to a standing ovation with nine minutes left, when he was replaced by Billy Daniels

Jordan Clarke who had a fine game, like the rest of his team mates, easily beat Morrison to a header away and with six minutes left, Callum Wilson was replaced by Mathieu Manset and left to a standing ovation and a big hug from his manager.

Franck Moussa got same ovation when he went off in the dying seconds and it was to big applause that City celebrated going off the bottom of the table.
