Supporters Put On A Display But City Don't

WEST BROMWICH ALBION 5-0 COVENTRY CITY BY KEV MONKS

The best turn out of City fans for an away game this season were treated to the worst performance of the season as City crashed to a 5-0 defeat at West Brom.

Two and a half thousand City supporters piled into cars, coaches, trains and trams and made their way over to The Hawthorns.

I made a mad dash from the U18's game along with three City supporters who had flown in from Northern Ireland on the train and tram and fought my way through the overly crowded concourse to take my place high in the away stand.

For this fixture, Micky Adams made only one change with the suspended Leon McKenzie being replaced by Marcus Hall.

Tony Mowbray who is still finding his feet at the Hawthorns, started with former Sky Blue John Hartson up front and had Luke Steele on the bench
The noisy City support demanded a good start but within 31 seconds of the first whistle,City were a goal down.
Dele Adebola had a shot saved by Russell Hoult. The Baggies broke up the other end. A mistake saw Andy Marshall on his backside and Diomansy Kamara was given the easy task of tapping into the net.

The Sky Blues main problem in the first half was in front of goal or defending it. Stern John should have done better in the sixth minute when all he had to do was lob the keeper. His finishing was on a par with the portly John Hartson who was abused every time he went near the ball.

One player who could score was Kamara and in the 33rd minute,he was brought down by Marcus Hall. A penalty was correctly given and he got up to slot home.

Michael Doyle and Robert Page who had a nightmare in the first half were cautioned with Page now suspended for the trip to Luton as is Duffy cautioned for a handball and Clive Clarke who looked out of position in the centre of midfield.
There was no disputing that Albion were a competent side, however, the way City defended, the Baggies fans must have thought they were world beaters.
And so it came as no surprised when our misery increased in the 38th minute after Jason Koumas broke and fired between Marshall and the near post for the Baggies third goal of the afternoon.

After the worst first half this season, things could only get better or so we thought.
Wrong!. City briefly rallied but in the 56th minute,Kevin Phillips added a fourth when he stroked home with not a City player within three yards of him.

A number of City fans took this as their cue to leave as did John Hartson who waddled off the pitch to good applause from the home crowd .

In the 61st minute,Adams made a double change with Kevin Kyle and Mikkel Bischoff coming on. With Kyle on, you would have thought Darren Currie would have been ideal for providing the crosses but Micky Adams in his infinite wisdom had brought on the Scot in his place.

Those City supporters still in the ground decided that if the team was not capable of giving us something to cheer then we would have to do it ourselves.

A chorus of "Twist n Shout" rang out for ten minutes before Albion added a fifth from a Paul Robinson header with seven left.
We carried on singing long after the final whistle and even on the tram back to Snow Hill which according to police was closed to City fans after the game.
Something which the players and City management did not deserve on this showing.
