Single Goal Beats Burnley

COVENTRY CITY 1-0 BURNLEY BY KEV MONKS

Coventry City maintained their good home form with a victory over Burnley.

City went into this game on a cold day at the Arena with Gary McSheffrey and Adie Williams suspended. Robert Page,Andy Morrell,Richard Shaw and Dennis Wise were all restored to the starting line up.

Attacking the away end,City were the first to show with Dele Adebola heading a Scowcroft cross over with less than ninety seconds on the watch of referee Eddie Ilderton.

Burnley came back winning a corner and Marton Fulop saving with his feet from Chris McCann.

The beacon of inspiration that is Dennis Wise like Robert Page was lively as usual and in the 17th minute, the former Millwall boss nearly put City ahead when he was not that far away with a 28 yard free kick.

On the half hour mark Michael Ricketts was cautioned for a trip on John. The Trinidadian got to his feet after treatment and saw his header deflected for a corner.

Into the second half and the game sprang into life when Wise and then James Scowcroft headed on for Dele Adebola at the far post to slam into the net against his former club.

The goal raised the atmosphere amongst a crowd of 19,641 which included fans from as far away as San Francisco.

In the 61st minute,City nearly increased their tally when an Adebola run saw John's shot blocked on the line. James Scowcroft pounced only for Brian Jensen to smother. Stern John tried again but Leicester reject Frank Sinclair was on the line to clear before Wise fired over.

Stern John was certainly a handful and fired across the face of the goal to win a 65th minute corner and then another from which James Scowcroft hit the post.

Steve Cotterill whose career has seen him work with Micky Adams and play alongside Alan Cork and Dennis Wise, was the first to make changes bringing on Kyle Lafferty and Gifton Noel Williams.

In the 72nd minute,Michael Doyle was sent crashing by a reckless challenge by Chris McCann who was cautioned. The matter did not end there and Wise,Sinclair and Micah Hyde all ended up in the book with Doyle again chopped down.

Don Hutchison and Andy Impey were brought on late as City earned another victory.
On the final whistle, there was a disturbance between City and Burnley by where the away coaches were parked with reports of numerous punches being thrown before the trouble was broken up.
