Poor Performance Means Defeat

COVENTRY CITY 0-1 PLYMOUTH ARGYLE BY KEV MONKS

Coventry City went down to their first home defeat against Plymouth in 50 years with another poor performance.

The visit of the West Country's top side to the Arena was Micky Adams 79th game in charge and the City boss who had received an approach by West Brom for his services was without the suspended David McNamee and dropped Michael Doyle and Leon McKenzie.

Plymouth boss Ian Holloway who met a number of City supporter at the Copa Ibiza last season when he was in charge of QPR named Luke McCormick and former Sky Blue Lillian Nalis in his starting eleven.

It was the Coventrian who was the busier of two keepers early on dealing with a first minute Stephen Hughes drive.

In what was another muted atmosphere in the lowest home crowd of the season, despite nearly 2,000 tickets going to various junior football clubs.

In the 12th minute,City won a corner,Plymouth broke up the other end. Rueben Reid was sent clear but thankfully could only thump a seven yard shot into the side netting.

Kevin Kyle had used his aerial presence to win a couple of corners but in the 24th minute,City's defence were in danger as a cross from Plymouth's best player for my money Akos Buzsaky skirted across the face of the goal.

Plymouth were now starting to have the better of the chances and Marshall had to be alert to push over a Luke Chadwick 31st minute drive.

Six minutes before the break, McCormick made an excellent save from the advancing Stern John.

Plymouth countered, a bad ball from Marshall resulted in Andy Whing conceding a corner and Marcus Hall superbly headed away and then mopped up when the ball came back in.

There were no changes at the break,

Stern John back after being dropped for the Palace game looked lively up front. He always looked a threat giving Mathias Doumbe problems every time he touched the ball but it was Colin Cameron who came closest to scoring when his 57th minute free kick from 25 yards curled and bounced off the far post.

In the 65th minute, the City bench made their first change with Dele Adebola who played well for the reserves in the week coming on for Chris Birchall.

The second came seven minutes later with Don Hutchison replacing Jay Tabb.

Try as they might,City could not find away through and in the 82nd minute they were made to pay by when second half sub Cherno Samba was not picked up and allowed to head past Marshall.

It was a bitter blow but not one unexpected after another poor performance.
