Coventry City provided some Boxing Day cheer with a 1-0 win over Port Vale.

At the Ricoh Arena on a blowy but dry Boxing Day afternoon, City, with three changes from the side which drew with Oldham, attacked the South Stand for the first half, against a Port Vale side that included former City loanees Carl Dickinson and Richard Duffy.

The visitors should have been ahead in the seventh minute when Ajay Leitch-Smith struck Charles-Cook's right hand post in a game watched by a crowd of 17,779.

Robert Page's side had the better of the few chances in a goal-less first half and City had the better of the chances in the opening twenty minutes of the second half including two penalty shouts.

Tony Mowbray sent on Jim O'Brien and James Maddison for the last eighteen minutes whilst Vale brought on former Sky Blues Chris Birchall.

In the 79th minute, Maddison got through to the edge of the area and James Maddison drove powerfully from twenty yards into the net to give City a 1-0 win.
