Ladies Do Oldham Double

Coventry City Ladies left it late to beat Oldham Curzon.

On a very heavy pitch at Coventry Sphinx, Mark Phillips side had Katy Ward.Michelle Archer and Nigerian international Blessing Igbojoinu all making their home debuts.

In the 14th minute when Amanda Whalley broke through and drilled in a low shot which Oldham keeper Kay Hawke superbly blocked with her legs.

With the conditions very heavy going, grinding out chances was not easy but in the 31st minute, Michelle Hickmott broke through only for Hawke,who has just been called up for international duty to make another superb save diving to her right.

City took the lead six minutes into the second half thanks to a run from Blessing Igbojoinu who out paced the visitors defence before slotting home from the edge of the area.

In the 66th minute, the visitors equalised through their leading scorer Kelly Dean who got free down the right before hitting a shot which bounced into the net of City keeper Gemma Smith.

Four minutes from time and with City needing a victory as Manchester City had won against Blackburn Rovers, the Sky Blues got the win when substitute Julia Marshall fed Katy Ward who turned her marker before firing into the net from eight yards.

Coventry City Reserves kept up their spell of good form with a 9-2 victory over Oldham at Coventry University. Karen Clough and Mel Byrne led the way with hat-tricks. Ria Baker scored twice with Katy Box also on the scoresheet.
