Hughes Off In First Defeat Of The Season

BURNLEY 4-0 COVENTRY CITY BY KEV MONKS

Burnley is a dark satanic place at the best of times and it was a depressing place to be as Coventry City's unbeaten start to the season ended with a 4-0 defeat.

Micky Adams who was told that he will have to make do with the players he has got due to the club's cash flow, keep the same team for the third game running.

On a very wet afternoon which slowly turned to cloud, and with rain seeping through holes in the roof on to the 950 strong City support in the David Fishwick Stand,

Burnley boss Steve Cotterill who had been thwarted in his efforts to sign Macedonian Artim Sakiri, saw Wayne Thomas head a Gareth O'Connor corner in the second minute with Stern John winning City's first flag kick three minutes later.

Wade Elliott limped off in the eleventh minute just before Gary McSheffrey carved his way through to rifle a twenty yarder at Jensen in the Clarets goal.

In the 15th minute, the agile Stephen Bywater dived to his left to push away a Micah Hyde shot from eight yards after a Noel Williams cross was nodded in Hyde's path.

Considering this was the third away league game in a week, the Sky Blue support was excellent and in fine voice despite Burnley taking the lead in the 27th minute when the ball was not cleared on the edge of the area and fell for Gareth O'Connor to drive low past Bywater and into the net.

Stephen Hughes sent a low free kick just wide before Gary McSheffrey fired just over.

In the 36th minute,Burnley who were second bottom at the start of play, went further ahead in the 36th minute when Wayne Thomas was left completely unmarked to head home an Gareth O'Connor corner from five yards.

In the 40th minute,Burnley were awarded a penalty when the assistant referee on the Main Stand spotted an infringement. A shove was the only plausible explanation for this.

Stephen Hughes was livid and confronted the assistant only to receive a red card from referee Mr Miller. Hughes first refused to leave the field of play and persisted in remonstrating with the assistant before making his way to the changing rooms.
Gifton Noel-Williams stepped up to take the kick and thankfully could only blast the ball high over the bar.

Claus Jorgensen was sent on for Stern John as Burnley twice went close before the half came to a close.

Against one of his former clubs,Dele Adebola was putting himself around and winning aerial battles only for the City players to continually play themselves into trouble.

Coventry's cause was not helped by the match officials who failed to spot a shove on James Scowcroft and in the 58th minute a blatant trip on the clean through Gary McSheffrey by Graham Branch.

Leicester reject Ade Akinbiyi should have increased the Clarets lead after he was left in space to curl just wide.

In the 70th minute,Micky Adams opted for what he thought was damage limitation when he brought on Adie Williams for Gary McSheffrey, despite the City supporters calling for Andy Morrell who did come on to replace Adebola six minutes later.

With four minutes left,Ade Akinbiyi drove home and then repeated the feat in the last minute to confirm City's first defeat of the season and their biggest for a couple of years.
