Coventry City progressed to the second round of the League Cup with a 3-0 win at Rushden & Diamonds.

For the second visit to Nene Park in less than a month, Micky Adams named a changed side to the one that had comprehensively beaten QPR on Saturday.

Clayton Ince started in goal,Andy Williams and Adie Williams came into defence whilst Andy Morrell and Stern John were back up front.

James Scowcroft was named in the side but must have suffered a pull as he was replaced before kick off by Isaac Osbourne.

City wasted no time in taking the game to Barry Hunter's side and in the eighth minute,Marcus Hall raced down the left flank and centred for Gary McSheffrey to stab in.

Isaac Osbourne was booked three minutes later as this time, the Sky Blues refuses to be pushed off the ball.

In the 16th minute,Dave Savage smashed Michael Doyle in an off the ball incident. the City fans appealed for a red card but only a yellow was waved by the referee Mr Probert.
Rushden came back slightly winning two corners and had a Rob Gier header from six yards glance inches past the far post.

In the 33rd minute, the assistant referee on the Main Stand side was clearly not up with play as Greg Pearson was clearly in offside position and seeking an unfair advantage as he bore down on goal before Clayton Ince saved with his feet.

The 1254 City support were in fine voice and were far happier when Matt Heath received a ball on the right and drilled low into the net following a free kick in the 39th minute.

Eight minutes into the second half and after a chorus of "Jingle Bells" from the City fans,Stern John was caught in possession and Rushden pushed forward allowing Pearson to stab home. The home fans celebrated but the flag had long been up for offside.

John atoned for his error with a blinding bit of skill to turn two defenders and win a corner when his centre was cleared in the 57th minute.

Ten minutes later,Adams made a change bringing on Neil Wood for Claus Jorgensen.

Rushden huffed and puffed but could not find a way past a resolute City side.

With fourteen minutes to go,Dele Adebola came on for Gary McSheffrey.

A good performance was complimented with ten minutes, when Andy Morrell, who worked hard all night, nutmegged Young in the Rushden goal and the ball went into the net, with Morrell checking he was onside before running to the City fans to celebrate.
