HULL CITY AFC 1-2 COVENTRY CITY BY KEV MONKS

Coventry City ensured their first ever visit to the KC Stadium was a successful one, coming from behind to record a 2-1 victory.

Micky Adams made two changes from the team that had drawn with Middlesbrough. Richard Shaw who has a testimonial on April 12th,was replaced by the man in the mask Robert Page and Dennis Wise came in for Don Hutchison.

We'd found the KC Stadium easy to get to and with a massive car park, five minutes walk from the ground, parking was not an issue.

The ground similar to Derby's and Bolton is well designed with the 350+ strong City support housed behind the goal City defended in the first half.

Like his debut against Derby,Dennis Wise was involved right from the start being shoved to the ground for City's first free kick in the third minute.

Another free kick led to Gary McSheffrey firing wide before Wise did likewise in the ninth minute.

Three minutes later, Peter Taylor's side forced Marton Fulop into action when Hungary's number one got down to save a Sam Collins header.

Robert Page was finding his mask uncomfortable but he refused to allow it to interfere with his concentration making a superbly timed tackle to thwart an 18th minute attack.

The side from East Riding started to gain the midfield, finding players and forcing Adie Williams and Richard Duffy to make some well timed blocks.
Wise who missed the Middlesbrough game through suspension picked up another card in the 25th minute when he was cautioned for unsporting behaviour and joined Keith Andrews in the book who had earlier flattened Michael Doyle.

It was this failure to boss the midfield that saw City go a goal down on the half hour mark.

Hull advanced down the right, the ball over was initially blocked by Williams. It took a lucky deflection and fell to Stuart Elliott on the left hand side of the penalty to ram low into the net.

Fulop twice saved including getting down to an Elliott free kick but could only watch as seconds before the break,Keith Andrews slammed a shot against the crossbar.

Micky Adams must have let rip at half-time as the worst first half of 2006 turned into a highly memorable second forty five minutes.

City regained control of the midfield and started to find the wingers. James Scowcroft nearly drew City level in the 48th minute when he linked with McSheffrey and Hall to send the ball inches the wrong side of the post.

Scowcroft was involved two minutes later when he played in Dennis Wise who hit a tame shot straight at Boaz Myhill.

Fulop cleared a Hull corner before Adebola had a shot blocked inside the area,John pounced on the loose ball. His deflected shot fell for McSheffrey on the left of the area to hit a close range shot which the Hull keeper superbly pushed onto the bar and out for a 55th minute corner. The flag kick came in,Stern John did very well to get in a superb header which Myhill brilliantly got a right hand to push the ball over for another corner.

The beauty of Dennis Wise is that you never know what he'll do next and on the hour mark,he got back on level terms.

Wise had his back to goal,he jumped to get his foot to the ball and send it over his head. This over head kick sent the ball looping into the air,Myhill was off his line and the ball came down over the keeper and into the back of the net before, Wise, with a grin a mile wide racing to the City fans to celebrate what was a goal of stunning proportions and one every bit as good as those goals Ian Wallace
used to thrill us with.

"Wisey For England" was the chant from the noisy Sky Blue support as Dele Adebola headed a hall cross agonisingly wide.

In the 65th minute,Richard Duffy made a brave tackle and came off worse. He got to his feet after treatment but a minute later went down and was replaced by Matt Heath.

James Scowcroft went into referees Andy Woolmer's book for allegedly impeding Stuart Elliott, but in the 72nd minute,City took the lead.

Gary McSheffrey was on the left,he cut down the byline and slipped the ball to the near post for Stern John to force into the net. John like Wise celebrated with the City support in a crowd of 18,381.

Peter Taylor, who was being called for as the next England boss by the City fans, made two changes bringing on Billy Paynter and Stuart Green.

With seven to go,Stern John was booked rather harshly when Keith Andrews went down in a heap.

It was backs to the wall for a bit as the home side raised their game winning a corner.

John Parkin was booked for dissent and in the 89th minute,Stern John left to huge support from the City fans to be replaced by Don Hutchison.

Five minutes were added on and Dele Adebola raced through before being fouled by Billy Paynter who was booked. The free kick was quickly taken with Wise nipping through to score. Unfortunately,Mr Woolmer was not ready and the kick had to be retaken.

Andy Morrell came on for McSheffrey in the 92nd minute and seconds later, Dennis Wise went to the ground in front of the home support away to our left. There was an angry reaction by some Hull fans with two bottles thrown. One hit Wise on the head whilst the other bounced onto the pitch. Thankfully the bottles were plastic and Wise was able to continue.

Hopefully this will be reported as it was right in front of the referee and those responsible banned.
Seconds later, Wise gave a cheery wave to the home fans before racing over to celebrate an excellent victory with his team-mates and the City fans.
