Coventry City manager Chris Coleman has given the captain's armband this season to Stephen Wright.

Although the defender missed much of last season through various injuries, his performances and attitude showed why he was selected for the job.

City boss Chris Coleman said to the CT: "He's got great experience and if you look at the games he played for us last year when he was in the team we had a good edge about us and a good winning ratio as well.

"He's level-headed and different to Scotty Dann, who we had last year and who was a maturing defender, and I just think he will be ideal for us this season.

"We have just got to make sure that we get him on the pitch, but when he's on the pitch - and I have no doubt that he will play more games for us this season, touch wood - then I think he will be a good leader for us.

"He was a good leader last year and just because you haven't got the armband on doesn't mean you can't be a leader and Stephen Wright is a classic example of that.

"He played at right-back and centre-half and he is such a calming influence as well and the other lads like to have him about because of his personality, calmness and for his humour as well because he's a typical Scouser."

"The manager has told me I am skipper, which I am delighted about," said Wright to the CT. "As a youngster I was always vice-captain but I have always had injuries and stuff at the wrong times when the captain's armband has been up for grabs, but it has never bothered me because I am a talker on the pitch anyway.

"But it is a great honour and getting the armband means I have got to make sure I do play more games."
