Former Coventry City player Noel Whelan is highly unlikely to get the manager's job at Aberdeen that he applied for.

The Dons are expected to announce former Millwall, Brighton and Motherwell boss Mark McGhee in the next couple of days as their new manager to replace Jimmy Calderwood.

Whelan, who had played for Aberdeen amongst a host of clubs, had former Sky Blue Dion Dublin and former City manager Ron Atkinson as part of his management team

Speaking to Sky Sports, Whelan said earlier this week: "I've completed my UEFA B licence and I am sitting my UEFA A qualification. "I may not have managerial experience, but I believe I can provide Aberdeen with fresh ideas.

"I have got a team together willing to come with me if I got the job. "One is a former team-mate of mine and Ron Atkinson is a former Premier League manager with one of the best clubs in the division with a wealth of experience."
