Westwood Returns, But 'Keeper Hunt Continues

Coventry City manager Aidy Boothroyd is still looking for that elusive number two goalkeeper even though Keiren Westwood has returned to the club following compassionate leave.

Since the release of the club's long standing number two 'keeper Dimi Konstantopolous, City have been short of an experienced reserve goal keeper to cover for Keiren Westwood.

Danny Ireland is still recuperating from a long term injury which leaves the 18 year old Michael Quirke as the only option available to Boothroyd.

Coventry have had two emergency loan 'keepers, Colin Doyle from Birmingham and Iain Turner from Everton. Both only lasted for a day before returning to their parent clubs, Doyle to cover for injured Ben Foster and Turner to recover from concussion sustain after only 18 minutes on the field at Watford.

Boothroyd is close to signing another young Australian goal keeper Lawrence Thomas, but he is another player for the future and not the experience understudy the City boss is looking for.

Quirke did well for the Sky Blues when he came on for the injured Turner and earned praise from Boothroyd for his performance.

"Michael did really well on Saturday." said Boothroyd to the CT. "The events of the day and the way we came back to earn a point overshadowed his debut but I thought he was brilliant and I'm really pleased for him because he's a delightful young man."

"You take players on a pro contract and sometimes you don't think they're going to get an opportunity, but he proved to me and other people out there that he can play league football.

"He was disappointed with their first goal but I don't think we should blame him for that because he made the save of the match before that and he was absolutely terrific afterwards."

"He got done by a John Eustace overhead kick which must be a collector's item; he certainly never scored like that for me, they all came off his knees or his backside!"

"We've got Lawrence Thomas, who I'm trying to tie up in the next few days so that's two fine young goalkeepers for the future but I need to bring in a number two regardless. The trouble is that at the moment if you're a goalkeeper and you hear that Coventry City are interested in you, you steer well clear!"

Boothroyd explained the loss of Turner saying, "Iain has got a mandatory two week lay off and while we could maybe squeeze in another game we've effectively lost him."
