Coventry City's highly rated goal keeper Keiren Westwood is said to be keen to stay at Coventry City and is also excited at the prospect of extending his contract with the club.

Westwood has continually been linked with moves to Premiership clubs, with Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland have had the Irish international goal keeper watched and assessed..

The news that talks about extending Westwood's contract, which expires in 2011, will go some way to squash the persistent rumours surrounding his imminent departure. If Westwood does agree to a new deal, it does not mean he will be staying at The Ricoh until the end of the new term, but it will strengthen Coventry City's bargaining power to gain maximum benefit from any future transfer should a Premiership club come in with a bid to lure the 25 year old away.

Coventry's manager Chris Coleman said to the CT, of the talks and speculation surrounding Westwood, "I spoke with Keiren two weeks ago when he came to see me to talk about signing a new contract and he is very much up for that, which is great news for us. "

We spoke face to face in my office and then I spoke to the chairman afterwards and both parties seem excited about getting round the table and thrashing a deal out, and that's the best new for this club."

Fans will remember last season when two of Coventry City's prized players, Scott Dann and Dan Fox both left the club despite promises that the club was keen to build a promotion capable team around ts better players. So with the club talking to Westwood the fans should be reassured that the board are at least trying to make positive progress.

Coleman spoke about putting final touches to his squad for next season, "I am constantly looking to improve the side because I don't think I have ever said that I am entirely happy with a squad I have had, whether that is at Fulham, out in Spain or here, because you are always thinking you can improve a little bit here and there," he said.

"It is important to keep what we have got because we don't want to be banging our head against a brick wall, but we know what football is like and if a someone comes in with a big bumper deal for a player, the club comes first. I hope that doesn't happen.

"We have got one or two out of contract and we will see how that goes but in the main we have got a real good nucleus but we need a bit of icing on the cake now and that's why this transfer window is going to be very important for us.

"We have not been able to spend a lot of money in my time at the club. We have had to do it this way and that but we have still brought in some good players, but these next two windows are going to be important for us."
