The chairman of Cambridge United has said that if the clubs at the Football League AGM had known that some of the Pemier League Clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool, etc were not going to accept the invitation to enter their U21 teams into the EFL Trophy, the vote for change would not have gone ahead.

Cambridge United along with the likes of Coventry City voted in favour of letting U21 teams into the competition and speaking to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, Jez George of Cambridge United said: "I'm very, very surprised the package wasn't secured with the bigger clubs before it went to a vote.

"If you'd have told the EFL clubs that maybe some of those clubs wouldn't even accept the invitation, I'm not sure there'd have even been a vote, let alone a vote being the same way."

Peterborough Chairman Darragh MacAnthony says he would not have voted for the changes had he known the line-up of under-21 teams.

MacAnthony tweeted:  "If I had know such large amount of them (Championship under-21 sides), then no chance (of voting in favour). You live and learn. Now we have to get on with it."
