Weather Causes Grimsby's Cup Tie To Be Abandoned

Grimsby Town, whom Coventry City are scheduled to travel to on Saturday, had their Carabao Cup First Round tie abandoned due to the weather.

The rain came down and with Derby leading 1-0 thanks to a goal from former City captain Richard Keogh, the conditions were such that the referee Trevor Kettle was forced to abandon the game in the 19th minute.

Grimsby boss and former City manager Russell Slade said that he hoped that the calling off of the game in the 19th minute had prevented any further damage to the pitch and told the Press Association:  "In the end, he made the right decision.

"It's not what any of us wanted in all fairness, but you could see that the ball was stopping and, in the interest of safety, he called it off, and I think he made the right choice.

"It was only ever going to get more difficult for everybody.

"And also, the longer-term thing from our point of view is on the first week of the season, we don't want our pitch absolutely ruined, which it would have been if we'd attempted to play on it."

Rain in Cleethorpes is expected on Wednesday but sunshine is forecast for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, which should mean that City's game goes ahead as scheduled.

The goal scored by former City player Richard Keogh might have been chalked from the records but a number of former City players were on target tonight.

Former City loanee Dominic Samuel scored in the 56th minute of Blackburn's 3-1 win at City whilst James Maddison scored for Norwich City in the 42nd minute of a 3-2 win over Swindon Town.

Former City striker Shaun Miller scored twice to give Carlisle United a 2-1 win at Fleetwood whilst former City loanee David McGoldrick scored for Ipswich Town in a 2-0 win at Luton Town.

The Carabao Cup shocks saw Accrington beat Preston North End, Cheltenham winning at Oxford United, Barnet winning at Peterborough and Newport winning at Southend.
