We Should Be Beating Sides Like That - Hopkins

Coventry Sphinx Manager Luke Hopkins has said that his side should be beating sides like Heather St Johns at home if they want to get promoted.

Speaking after the 2-2 draw on Saturday, Hopkins told the Sphinx website: “Games like that we should be winning.

“If we want to complete in the top six of the table we need to be taking points from team like HSJ at home. So far this season we have been decent at home and the footballing performance didn’t disappoint Saturday, we created a large number of chance s in the first half and used the conditions well as Quorn did against us last week, we just didn’t put the ball in the net.

“It went into the box on a number of times with no end result, the game should have been done and dealt with by half time with us being 3-0 up.

“Jackson Downie was by far, the Man of the Match controlling the tempo and attacking play, he’s 18 years of age and had an up and down season, but this was definitely an up and we know he will only get better and better, keeping hold of him will be the problem.

“The first half we had some very good chances and in respect the goalkeeper pulled off some great saves. 0-0 at half time the lads were thinking what do we need to do to score, we re-gathered, changed our approach slightly for the conditions and carried on where we had left off.

“I think we grew into the game too much and got punished on a counter attack which they scored from and was their only shot on goal in the game as the second goal five minutes later was actually an own goal. In the same circumstances, we were pressing looking for a goal now 1-0 down and they counter attacked. Normally we are strong and stern at the back, but frustration in goal hunting made us pay.

“We got back into the game with good play between, Luke Downes, Ash Cain and Jackson Downie being brought down for a pen, which Luke Williams doesn’t miss.

“We had a few chances and added Aden Moore and Ashley Wilks to the attack, which got us an equalising goal with Wilks crossing for Rickie Cutting to head in.

“2-2 in the end is a poor result I think and I see it as two points dropped but there was more than enough positives to tell me that decisions made were the right ones and we are ready to train this week and prepare for the next game away at Causeway as the lads want to play football for Coventry Sphinx.”
