Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has warned his side about the perils of Coventry City rising to the occasion.

Hughton knows all about this when he played for Tottenham in the 1987 FA Cup Final and was on the end of a 3-2 defeat which many in the game called a shock.

Speaking to The Mirror, Hughton said: “The gap at the top is important. It is where we want to be. We have a cluster of teams below us on a run. Forest, Boro have had a great result, Sheffield United.

“The bigger gap we get the happier we will be. We will get tripped up at some point but we have to guard against that.

“We have to make sure we are not the type of team who get Coventry going."
