Wasps Rugby Club have been forced to apologise after one of their fans climbed on to the Jimmy Hill statue at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday and placed on it a Wasps flag and wig.

Although not as bad an act as the graffiti which was painted on to monuments in London during a demonstration over the weekend, the act has not gone down well in Coventry, especially amongst Coventry City supporters and those who are care for the city's heritage and traditions.

With the internet buzzing with calls for the person responsible to be identified, the formation of vigilante groups in order to protect the statue during Wasps games and deal with anyone who tries to attempt scaling the statue which was not damaged in this latest prank or the moving of the statue away from the Ricoh Arena to a safer enviroment, Wasps have issued the following statement: “We would ask visitors to the Ricoh Arena to please respect the Jimmy Hill statue – a man who played an enormous part in Coventry City’s history and is remembered fondly by sports fans around the world – and leave it alone on match days.

“We would like to apologise for any offence caused to Sky Blues fans.”
