Up To Three Year Wait For Arena Trains

Coventry City supporters will have to wait anything up to three years to be able to get a train to the Ricoh Arena.

MP for the Railways Tom Harris gave the amber light to the much needed service which will also benefit those wishing to use shops at Arena Park, last week following a top level meeting with Coventry MP'S including CCFC Acting Chairman Geofffey Robinson and high ranking Coventry City Council officials.

Initially, Coventry City Council had set aside £1.5m for the station which will be located behind the East Stand but with costs rising, the Council are appealing to the private sector to help meet the extra costs.

The Council will also need to meet Govia who have the contract to run trains on the Coventry to Nuneaton line which could in the future serve stations at Kenilworth and Leamington. At the moment, two trains an hour have been proposed but this might increase on match days.

Barry Butterworth told the Coventry Observer: "We went into the meeting with a list of objectives we needed to achieve, and we achieved all of those,

"The minister said the Ricoh Arena was a great project, it was a success, and understood the need for a station. "But even though the transport minister has given it the amber light, there's a long way to go before the station opens - at least two to three years."
