U21 League Will Bridge The Gap - Carsley

Lee Carsley has been talking about the U21 League that City will be entering a team next season.

Each team in the league will play fifteen matches with five over-age players permitted. Some clubs are expected to play at non-league grounds and get their players used to playing in front of crowds but City will be based at Ryton and use the far cheaper option of playing their matches behind closed doors.

Speaking to the CT's Andy Turner, Carsley said: “ We will be based at Ryton which is good because I'll be up there as well, helping Harry and Andy and were going to be one squad.

"We will train with the first team in the morning and I'll be taking younger boys in the afternoon.

"It will be like the old Pontins Reserve League and the opportunity for the lads to make their mistakes and develop, rather than using the first team as their development squad.

"They shouldnt be making their mistakes in front of big crowds, they should be doing it behind closed doors where we can work on their game.

"They have done really well but they need a competitive environment where they can play with a little less fear and enjoy it.

"It is part of the new development squad guidelines going forward where the lads play 15 games a season and its going to be brilliant for them.

"It will also be great for the senior lads as well because I know myself that if you are coming back from injury it is difficult to get your form back by training alone.

"We need to utilise this league so that if they are coming back from injury or out of form they can play 90 minutes of competitive football and get back into the tempo that way, rather than doing it while you are in the first team."
