The Carling Cup continued to produce shocks. West Ham were beaten 2-1 at Chesterfield and Notts County beat Southampton 2-0.Also going out were Norwich City who lost on penalties to Port Vale after a goal less draw.

Locally, Leamington beat Barwell in a 3-1 in a League Cup tie, Fielding former Sky Blue Tom Bates, Leamington took the lead through Ben Mackey and added two more in the second half through Scott Darroch and Dave Pearson.

Coventry Sphinx progressed to the second round of the Birmingham Midland Floodlit Cup with a 4-3 victory at Alveston. Paul Charnley's side were ahead inside five minutes when PJ Gordon kept his cool and beat former Sphinx keeper Pete Dye with a low drive.

Five minutes later,Gordon headed in from a corner. Alveston pulled one back within forty seconds when Wilkinson beat the offside trap to score. In the 15th minute,another corner saw Gordon knock the ball down for Terry Ward to lash in.

Ryan Howell pulled one back in the 31st minute but fifteen seconds later,PJ Gordon completed his hat-trick when he steered home from close range.

In a second half which saw both managers unhappy with some of the decisions by the referee, Ryan Howell broke through to score in the 73rd minute.

There was a spate of bookings late on as Sphinx held on to win.

Other results saw Coventry Copsewood through on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Tividale but Nuneaton Griff are out losing 3-0 at Dudley Sports.
In the Jack Mould Trophy Coventry Sphinx Reserves beat Burntwood 3-1.
Kenilworth Town have announced they have been forced to resign from the Midland Combination due to a lack of players. A long standing club whose former players include Tim Flowers, things have not gone well for Town over the last couple of seasons. Hopefully ,this will not be the end of the club.
