Tough times ahead

Coventry City striker Gary McSheffrey has conceded that his side face a tough and testing time over the next few weeks and admitted that the loss of fellow striker Freddy Eastwood is a big blow to the team.

Eastwood damaged his hamstring during the 3-0 home defeat to Norwich last weekend and now faces some weeks on the sidelines.

McSheffrey said, “That was a blow because we need everybody we’ve got at the moment and the result was a little bit demoralising, We were playing OK but the goals we conceded weren’t great and in the end it wasn’t a very nice defeat."

“Norwich are a good side who move the ball around very well and they used 20-odd players while a lot of us were having our second 90 minutes in three or four days, but we worked hard to the end so that goes into the fitness bank and it’s all part of the learning curve."

"We know what we’ve got to do on the training pitch to sharpen up and raise our game  and hopefully we won’t concede a goal in the first minute against Leicester! We’ve got a tough couple of weeks coming up at the start of the season but we’ve got to be positive and I’m sure we’ll be all right.”

McSheffrey moved to reassure the fans that the much publicised off field problems the club is undergoing, the talk of a takeover, the financial and investment considerations and the seemingly ceaseless speculation surrounding players either leaving or joining, are not affecting the team at all.

He admitted, “We obviously want stability and we all want to be part of a good tight club that’s going in the right direction, but we try to keep it out of our minds at the training ground and so far hasn’t affected anybody.”
