FIRST HALF
Notts County who beat Middlesbrough and Southampton in this League Cup competition last season, looked dangerous from the start and should have been ahead after fifty seconds when Hector Sam was left unmarked to head over from eight yards.

Issac Osbourne who again was deputising at right back for the injured David McNamee had to make a brilliant saving tackle on Dudfield minutes later.

Leon Best looked useful up front, having two chances but Kevin Pilkington's first save came in the 22nd minute when Julian Gray lashed in a shot which the former Manchester United keeper pushed into the air and then caught at the second attempt.

On the half hour mark, the oldest Football League club, who were quick on the break, should have gone ahead when a near post corner from Austin McCann was flicked on by Jason Lee and Osbourne had to clear off the line.

Five minutes later the ball was in the net when Adebola raced through but Ollie Langford's flag was up and the goal did not stand.

At the other end,Robert Page was in good form and kept things tight allowing Cairo to have a free kicked saved as the game reached the half-time interval with-out a goal.

SECOND HALF
In pouring rain,City attacked the CT Stand and were ahead after fifty eight seconds of the restart.

Dele Adebola got the ball on the right of the area from a Page through-ball and beat off a defender before thumping a left footed effort into the net.

As the rain worsened and supporters headed for higher ground,Pilkington made a good 52nd minute save from Best after good work by Adebola who blasted over two minutes later.

The Championship leader's second disallowed goal came in the next attack when Adebola and Cairo combined for Doyle to rifle home from six yards. Again there was a flag on the play and the goal was chalked off.

Chris Birchall came on and City, who by now had the bit firmly between their teeth, doubled their lead in the 66th minute when Leon Best raced through and drilled a shot which Pilkington pushed upwards but could not stop from crossing the line.

Playing some good football gave the Sky Blues a third goal with thirteen minutes left. Substitute Jay Tabb's cross was knocked down by Best for the third substitute Robbie Simpson smacked home with a low drive to his first competitive goal for the Sky Blues since his move from Cambridge United.
The lively Simpson, who caught a few supporters eye, had a couple of efforts on goal before the final whistle ended a good second half for the Sky Blues and a place in the League Cup 2nd Round.

SUPPORTERS VIEW
Steve from Radford who was attending his 600th consecutive home game said: "City were dominant throughout and were never put any pressure by County.
"The general passing and movement by the Sky Blues caused problems all night and the win was thoroughly deserved."
