Coventry City manager Andy Thorn has hailed the decision to allow Saturday's Championship game between Birmingham City and Coventry City to go ahead after the rioting earlier in the week.
The game had been threatened with postponement on police advice following the unrest in many parts of the country including Birmingham, where three young men were run down and killed when a car was driven at them.
The West Midlands Police force yesterday decided that it was safe to allow the game to take place after the violence of previous nights has now abated and there will be sufficient numbers of officers to police the game.
The game will kick off at the scheduled time of 3:00pm and Thorn could not be happier, not only as a football manager, but as a concerned citizen as well.
He said, “What’s gone on this week has been awful and I don’t believe you should give in to that sort of mindless thuggery. People want cheering up and a game of football is a great way of doing that so I’m really glad it’s going ahead."
“From our point of view it’s a tough game because Birmingham are a good side but we’re looking forward to it. Any game’s ideal when you’ve lost, we’ve done a lot of work in training this week and we’re itching to get back out on the pitch.”
