The Jimmy Hill Way: It Seems We Hoped Too Soon

Press statement from The Jimmy Hill Way Campaign

"Yesterday, we issued an article "Does Today Mark the End of Sisu’s Legal Campaign Over the Ricoh Arena?" reflecting on the passing of an apparent deadline for Sisu Capital, owners of Coventry City Football Club, to continue legal action against Coventry City Council and Wasps Rugby Club under a Judicial Review application to the Supreme Court.

We did include a reservation within the article that this deadline could be extended in exceptional circumstances. Sadly, that element of doubt came to fruition last night, as news circulated that the deadline had indeed been pushed forward by the Supreme Court to 27th November. That is not too say that Sisu will continue the process but it is now a reasonable assumption that they still intend to seek permission to bring this case.

Consequently, until we hear to the contrary we must assume that CCFC will remain embroiled in a dispute with their landlords at the Ricoh Arena, Wasps, and that this will be an insurmountable obstacle to the Sky Blues playing at the Ricoh beyond the current season which ends in May 2019, as Wasps will not negotiate a new deal while legal action continues against them. Needless to say, this prospect is bitterly disappointing and could lead to the final demise of Coventry City FC in the absence of a ground on which to play home fixtures.

The momentary hope that City supporters would see the end to this intractable wrangle and a clear future at the Ricoh Arena for our beloved club has been cruelly snuffed out, at least for now.
