The Emphasis Is On Winning Games - Fisher

Coventry City CEO Tim Fisher has said the emphasis for players has shifted from appearing in games to winning them.

City have given the players, not including those signed during this pre-season, a new wage structure which has meant a change in the way bonuses are paid.

Speaking to the CT's Alan Poole about these contract changes, Mr Fisher said: "The club comes first. We are creating a culture of change for good. This includes motivating the squad to get the club promoted. The emphasis is therefore towards winning games, not just appearing in games.

We have gone to all of the players contracted to the club prior to this summer to discuss the terms of their contracts because we are determined to reward success. This means winning matches and, ultimately, winning promotion. The majority of these players have already accepted the new terms. We are reaching the end of our negotiations with the remaining players.

Every player that has joined the club this summer agreed the terms as part of their contract with us so these talks have no bearing on them whatsoever.

Everyone connected with the club knows that our budgets have been slashed because of relegation. However, this is as much about creating a culture that motivates success not mediocrity. The club paid out the thick end of £1 million in bonuses last season – in a year when we were relegated. We feel this is not acceptable and had to change.

The players have responded in engaging in mature sit down discussions. The overall bonus pool this season is projected to be higher than the bonus monies that were paid-out last year but with one significant difference – it requires success to trigger the bonuses which we think is only right and proper and I am sure the vast majority of supporters would agree with that. We are not going to tolerate mediocrity or, indeed, reward it.

It has been pleasing to see that the players have recognised the plight of the club and have acted in the best interests of Coventry City. Ultimately, if we win promotion it will benefit them financially, too.
