The first round of the Carling Cup produced its's usual collection of shocks.

League Two side Lincoln City put in a cracking performance to beat Crewe Alexandra 5-1.

It was another bad trip for Queens Park Rangers. Having become the first team ever to lose at the Arena,the West Londoners had Coventry kid Ian Evatt sent off in a 3-0 defeat at Northampton Town.

Blackpool managed by former Sky Blue Colin Hendry beat Championship new comers Hull City 2-1 with another former Sky Blue Peter Clarke on the scoresheet.

Yeovil Town who are bottom of League One won 2-0 at Ipswich Town.

Shrewsbury Town won their first League Cup tie for twelve years when they recorded a 3-2 extra-time win at home to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Mansfield Town beat Stoke City 3-0 on penalties after the game finished in a 1-1 draw.

Penalties also gave Barnsley a win at Preston North End. The game had finished 2-2 with Coventry born Graham Alexander scoring in the last minute of extra time. The Tykes won 5-4 on penlties.

Nottingham Forest were beaten 3-2 at home by League Two outfit Macclesfield Town.

Cheltenham thrashed League One leaders Brentford 5-0.

Barnet won 4-2 away at Bristol City.
