Coventry City's Development Director Steve Waggott has said although there is still a long way to go, talks with Richard Keogh and Martin Cranie about extending the duo's stay at the Ricoh Arena has been positive.

Speaking to the CT's Alan Poole, Mr Waggott said: “There’s a long way to go and I am sure that Martin will have other offers to consider but I’ve been encouraged by the way things have gone so far.

“I’ve had positive talks with Martin and I’m due to speak to Richard again on Monday.

“They obviously want to know about the position of the club now that we’ve dropped into League One but I’ve told them that we are looking to get back into the Championship straight away and we want them to be part of that journey.

“Both of them have got a very good relationship with Andy Thorn and he’s been talking to them constantly about the overall situation while I discuss what can be offered to them realistically.

“We are determined to hold on to two of our outstanding players but both of them are keen to know the club’s aspirations – what’s happening with the embargo, whether we’ll have new players coming in.

"I’ve told them that we aim to bounce back at the first attempt which is easy to say and hard to do, although we’d certainly stand a much better chance of realising that aim with players of their capability on board.”
