Former Coventry City youngster Gavin Strachan has left Doncaster Rovers.

Strachan, the son of the former City player and manager Gordon, made sixteen appearances for City from 1997 to 2003 and had been the assistant manager at the Keepmoat Stadium for the last two years.

The Aberdeen born midfielder said to Doncaster's club website: “The level of support we’ve had over the years has been overriding, that relationship between the staff, the players and the fans is back again and that gives me a real sense of pride,” he said.

“From the time we went down into League Two, even at that point, the fans were so supportive over the years, and I have nothing but thanks to them really.

“Looking back I am really proud to have played a part, I have worked with some fantastic individuals ranging from the players, people at the stadium and the wonderful staff at Cantley Park.”

Strachan has departed as the League One club have appointed former Peterborough boss Grant McCann as their new manager.

McCann said about his new job: : “I cannot wait to get started, Doncaster are a club with real potential and ambition, and after meeting the chairman and chief executive I am confident we can work together to get the club into the Championship and stay there.

“We have the makings of a successful season, with a good squad of players and backroom staff already in place to provide the foundations. Rovers are renowned in football as leaders off the pitch for our community and fan engagement work, and I am really excited to join a club with such a culture.”
