Stern Scores In Saints Cup Exit

Former Coventry City striker Stern John scored for Southampton in a League Cup tie at Rotherham United but the Saints who are the next visitors to the Ricoh Arena were beaten 3-1.

League One Northampton led 2-0 at Sunderland but were pegged back and lost 4-3 on penalties.

Other shocks saw Burnley beat Fulham 1-0 and Watford beat West Ham 1-0 with Reading losing on penalties to Stoke City.

Swansea won the all Welsh League Cup tie beating Cardiff City 1-0.

Sheffield United,who were awful against the Sky Blues last week, were ripped apart by a very young Arsenal team. The Gunners who included a sixteen year old and six other teenagers won 6-0. The Blades, have some good news in that West Ham have been ordered to pay up to £30m in compensation after the Carlos Tevaz transfer was finally ruled illegal.

Locally, tonight, a number of our teams were in action. Atherstone Town keep the pressure on BGB League Leaders Leamington with a 2-0 victory against Soham Rangers. Bedworth United had a good win beating Dunstable 3-0 with Adam Kinder scoring twice.

In the Birmingham Senior Cup, Tony Dobson's Rugby Town won a 1st Round tie against Racing Club Warwick 3-2 after extra time.

In the second round, Leamington won 1-0 at Studley with a goal from Corbett but Nuneaton were beaten 3-2 by Wolves with Hemmings scoring the winner for Mick McCarthy's side two minutes from time.
