The Manhatten Sports Capital Group will face stringent tests before being allowed to take control of Coventry City FC but Sports Minister Richard Caborn wants to make them even tougher.

The Sports Minister met representatives from the FA,FL and PL today and called for clubs to retain their links with the community.
"Rules on ownership must remain under constant review and strengthened if necessary," said Caborn. "There are concerns that the community roots of the game must be protected."
The Sheffield United supporting MP also wants to investigate the "fit and proper person test" which new owners and directors must under go as part of measures introduced a few seasons ago with help from the Football Supporters Federation.

He said :"With the football authorities having in place their own fit and proper persons rules on top of those applied through company law, it's fair to say stronger rules on ownership apply to football than to other companies.

"This is absolutely right given the special nature of the game. "I was also reassured that new owners are continuing to invest in youth and community schemes that are in the long-term interest of the club and the game as a whole. "I offered to look very seriously at any proposals from football for greater support from government."
