Coventry Sphinx put in a tremendous effort and won 1-0 at Willenhall Town in a re-arranged Midland Alliance fixture.

Danny McSheffrey fielded loanee Chris Gumery and the effect of the Coalville Town player had was immediate as he got to a Chris Hayden ball and beat the home keeper with a low drive within six minutes of the first whistle from referee James Kerrigan.

Jamie McAteer and Gumery both made the keeper work as Sphinx restricted the home side to long range shots on probably the biggest pitch in the division.

Josh Ruff was just one of the Sphinx players who was prepared to battle for every ball and his shot in the 26th minute was blocked for a corner.

Sphinx, whose work rate was excellent with every player rallying to the cause, continued in the second half to look for a second goal but came up against the in-form Liam Flynn who pushed a 54th minute Stevenson shot from twenty yards over before diving to his left to palm  away an Edwards piledriver for a corner which Reece Leek had to clear off the line.

The saves from Flynn continued. In the 71st minute, Flynn tipped a Ruff shot over and seven minutes later, he thwarted substitute Andy Williams who had broke through with a brave block at his feet.

With Sphinx unable to get that second goal, Willenhall had a late spell of pressure but when Leek fired wide deep into the six minutes of stoppage time, the very welcome three points were going back down the M6 to Coventry.
