Sphinx Through To Face Forest

Coventry Sphinx went through to the FA Youth Cup First Round proper for the first time in the club's history with a fine 4-1 victory at home to Eccleshall.

In front of a large crowd at Sphinx Drive, John Woodward's side were ahead inside two minutes when centre half Jack Pearson headed in from a corner. The Staffordshire side who also had a goal ruled out,leveled 31st minute through Adam Phillips curler from the edge of the area.

Ten minutes into the second half,Sphinx regained the lead with a Richard Elliott strike from the edge of the area. The goal gave Sphinx the impetus and six minutes later,Calum Woodward was on hand to hammer home after James Halton's shot had hit the crossbar and bounced down.

Four minutes from time,a fine victory was capped when Woodward turned provider,crossing for substitute Michael Wallace to slam the ball into the roof of the net to give Sphinx a First Round home tie against Nottingham Forest on Thursday November 9th.
Elsewhere, Coventry Copsewood have appointed Martin Ashcroft as joint manager with Scott Furlong. Ashcroft started last season at Coventry Sphinx before moving to Atherstone Town.
Former City keeper Scott Shearer has joined Shrewsbury Town on a three month loan from Bristol Rovers.
