Coventry Sphinx went out of the Polymac League Cup after a 1-0 defeat at Highgate United.

In this Polymac League Cup Second Round tie, Sphinx boss Luke Hopkins named a strong side with Matty Fowler back after suspension and former Coventry City first teamer Ashley Cain starting up front.

On a cold night at Tythe Barn Lane, Carl O'Neill was involved early making a save with his feet from Edgington. That was cleared and Sphinx won a second minute corner which Ash Wilks headed wide from.

Six minutes later and Wilks was unlucky when his twenty yarder was pushed over for a corner.

Cain fired at Jay before the Sphinx defence with Ricky Fletcher and Matty. Fowler at its core dealt with a shot.

Cain fired over in the 23rd minute but Highgate attacked and Sullivan got back to clear off the line from a Brown shot.

Another corner for Sphinx came on the half hour mark following Pulisciano heading out, Tom Dyke fired over before play was held up for three minutes due to an injury to the home keeper.

Three minutes into the second half and Sphinx were on the attack winning a free kick following a foul by Rolfe which led to a corner.

Highgate who are flying high in the table, responded with three corners, the second of which was hacked off the line.

Adam Sullivan limped off and was replaced by Jackson Downie just before the hour mark as Sphinx dropped to back three.

O'Neill sent down a kick which Jay punched over for a corner that was cleared up to Lei Brown but O'Neill was out and used his legs to block.

In the 71st minute, Edgington thumped O'Neill's left hand post. Sphinx recovered and Wilks fired inches over at the other end.

Four minutes later and the deadlock was finally broken when Highgate attacked down the left and Edgington slid into score.

Things had been boiling under for a while and in the 78th minute, there was a melee involving all the players and the Highgate manager who came racing on and got involved.

Downie and Adams saw red along with the the Highgate manager who was sent on the long walk to the changing rooms.

Cain had one effort at the end but Sphinx were out.
