Sphinx In Nine Goal Thriller

COVENTRY SPHINX 6-3 SPHINX SPORTS & SOCIAL

On the warmest day of the year, Coventry Sphinx were involved in a nine goal thriller against Sphinx Sports & Social at Sphinx Drive.

In the second pre-season game, Luke Hopkins side were able to create chances against the Coventry Alliance Division 2 champions and took the lead in the 26th minute when Greg Webb scored from six yards.

However, back came Shaun Sweeney’s side and three minutes later, Andy Williams danced his way through to smash a 25 yarder high into the net and draw the Coventry Alliance side level.

Webb and Rickie Cutting both hit posts before Sphinx went back in front in the 42nd minute after Webb rounded the keeper and the ball cannoned off the helpless Tom Cudworth and a minute later, it was three when Webb was left alone to scored with a neat finish.

Three minutes into the second half and Webb turned provider for Rickie Cutting to make it four in the 48th minute. Immediately, Sphinx Sports & Social responded with an attack which saw the ball come over for Craig Pead to fire home from twenty yards and half the defecit.

On the hour mark, Sphinx were awarded a penalty when the referee spotted a handball and Greg Webb stepped up to complete his hat-trick.

Five became six, in the 66th minute when Liam McNally picked up the ball in midfield and sent a lovely twenty yard shot high into the net.

The goals were not finished and in the 76th minute, Andy Williams got down the left to score a third for Shaun Sweeney’s side and complete a good afternoon’s run out for both team’s.

Sphinx are at home on Tuesday night to Southam United. Kick off is at 7.30pm.
