Coventry Sphinx manager Danny McSheffrey has said that he is looking forward to tonight's visit of a Coventry City side.
Speaking to Covsupport News Service, McSheffrey said about the game which kicks off at 7pm at Sphinx Drive: '' I am very grateful that Gregor Rioch has again agreed to bring a team to Sphinx Drive and it will be a good test to see how far we have come in preseason.
"So far the results have reflected that our preparations have not been all that but in all honesty I agree with Andy Thorn in Monday's Coventry Telegraph that preseason results mean nothing and although it's nice to get into good habits of winning matches it is equally as good to have some negative results and a reality check in preseason so you can adapt / react to weak areas and improve them whilst the results mean nothing.
"I am excited about Tuesday's game against a Coventry City side and am look forward to Saturday when we kick off the season away to Heath Hayes. "
Speaking about his club's pre-season, McSheffrey said: "From a football perspective - Pre-season has been very tough for the players and in step 5 on the pyramid it is imperative to have good fitness levels and we believe the fitness levels are nearly there and by Saturday we will know for sure if we've prepared correctly. The results have been mixed so far in preseason winning 2, drawing 1 and losing 3 (all by the odd goal) but preseason for me is about getting match time into your players legs and I am now happy with where we are at and are looking forward to our final friendly on Tuesdasy night against a young Coventry City side. We have made 5 new signings in Jack Edwards, Ashley Jackson, Luke Williams, Dion Barrett and Carl Konadu who are added to some very valuable existing players that we have managed to keep at the club despite alot if interest for our key players from other local clubs and collectively this will bring strength to our sqaud and I am excited about the prospect of having good headaches with team selections which last season we didn't have. I must admit our planning for this season started at the back end of last season as we needed to improve things massively and hopefully we have got it right. We have also strengthened our management team in bringing Nigel Starkey in as first team coach from his post as Youth Team Manager for the last two years and Nigel adds to an already proactive and determined team in the dugout. "Last season we quickly identified that we had to weather the storm in a transitional year for Coventry Sphinx that was a very disappointing one. We had to replace many players and we practically had to rebuild a new team with a stronger mentality and a new fresh mentality. As a manager on the back of winning the the league cup the season before it was very frustrating and difficult for me but it was a great learning curve and I feel I will be a better person and Manager for that experience. We will now try our upmost to 'move on and up and hopefully take massive steps forward this season but only time will tell. I cant wait for the season to start on Saturday and am confident we will move forward this season. "Tuesday's game against a youthful Coventry City team is one that we have played for the last three years and I am looking forward to it. Greg Rioch heads the team that come to the Sphinx and it has been a very good test for us each year and will test my lads fitness, touch, concentration levels and organisation on the pitch as they will be playing against a quality opposition that will punish all mistakes.
