Coventry Sphinx have plenty of positives to take after losing only 2-0 to Southern League side Barwell.

Against a home side which included former City youngsters Robert Oddy and Tom Bates and a number of former Nuneaton, Bedworth and Sphinx players, Carl Nolan's side defended two corners in the first four minutes and won a corner before keeper Dave Dallenty made three good saves.

Tom Bates sent two shots high and wide before play was temporarily halted when the referee ordered some fox excrement to be removed from the pitch.

James Ritson and Matt Ross did well in the heart of the Sphinx defence but could do nothing as the defence was split and Tom Weale was able to give the Southern League outfit the lead with a 36th minute drive from the edge of the area.

Luke Barlone glanced Dellenty's right hand post with a 41st minute header and Bates sent a free kick wide before the half ended.

Sphinx created two good chances in the opening fifteen minutes with Paul Saunders firing wide and after Nolan had made four chances, Rickie Cutting was sent clear but with the keeper to beat, slotted the ball wide.

In the 76th minute, the ball came over and Nigel Julien scored from close range.

Two minutes later, Barwell were awarded a penalty. Kev Charley stepped up and Dellenty dived to his left to beat away.

The assistant referee thought that the Sphinx keeper had moved forward from his line and ordered the kick to ge re-taken.

This time, Charley's kick was put the same way and Dellenty went the same way to save and ensure that Barwell's two goal were enough to win the game.
