Sky Blue Heroes To Get A Book Launch

Last updated : 16 November 2015 By CCFPA

On 16th May 1987 Coventry City won the first major trophy in their 104-year history. It was an extraordinary period for the city and its football club as they united to celebrate a fabulous success. Victories over Bolton, Manchester United, Stoke City, Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United took ‘George and John’s Sky Blue Army’ (CCFPA members George Curtis and John Sillett) to Wembley, where they overturned the form book to inflict Tottenham’s first ever FA Cup final defeat.

Well known CCFC chronicler Steve Phelps with four previous books under his belt (January & the Season’s Over (2007); It’ll Be Different Next Year (2008); Coventry on this Day (2010); Coventry City Miscellany (2011)) has come up with an important new story to cover in his inimitable style. For the first time, the cast of ’87, are reunited to tell their stories in print. The Association assisted Steve in reaching some of the Sky Blues personalities he needed to contact and committee and associate members contributed their own memories shows in this comprehensive ‘inside story’ of perhaps the Club’s greatest modern achievement.

Sky Blue Heroes: The Inside Story of Coventry City’s 1987 FA Cup Win features exclusive interviews with players, management, media, mascots, songwriters, club staff and supporters, documenting a magical time in Coventry City’s history. Contemporary media reports appear alongside memories and retrospectives – and the first interview for 28 years with the ‘mystery man’ (now revealed) who appeared on the Wembley pitch photograph with the jubilant players. Steve has done extensive interviews with CCFPA members including the members of the victorious 1987 squad, some of our committee members and some of our Association’s Associate members too.

Although the book was published last August it will be formally launched at a special signing opportunity this month with some CCFPA members, all members of the victorious 1987 squad promised to come along and help Steve launch his book.  The get together will take place at Waterstone’s City Centre Store in Coventry on Friday November 27th from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Come along to see some of your favourite Sky Blues heroes and buy a copy of Steve’s book.

If you can’t get there, copies of the fully illustrated hard back book (printed by Pitch Publishing) and priced at £18.99 full price can be bought from all good booksellers or at a discount online by clicking on the image below:
