Oldham took the lead at Boundary Park through a Kevin Foley own goal in the seventh minute with Marcus Tudgay equalising two munutes later.

The City supporters were livid that a foul on goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook was not given and former Coventry City loanee Peter Clarke put the Latics ahead in the 66th minute with Ryan McLaughlin adding a third four minute later.

Substitute Kwame Thomas rose to head a goal back for City but it was not enough and speaking about the victory to the Press Association, Sheridan said: "It's very tight near the bottom of the league and we'll possibly have another seven or eight games like this before the end of the season.

"Sometimes you need to grind it out - it doesn't really matter how you get the results.

"I've got an honest group of players who are sticking together. They know we are out of the bottom four after today, but it's all about staying out.

"They are chuffed with the win, but I'm thinking more about the goals we conceded and looking for ways we can keep getting better.

"I'm pleased Ryan McLaughlin got his goal because he's playing out of position up front but he's honest and he'll always put a shift in.

"It's pleasing to score three goals in a game, but we need to keep making it as tough as possible for opposition teams and keep battling to the end of the season."
