Luton Town kicked off the Championship season with a 2-0 win over Leicester City at Kenilworth Road in a game moved forward for Sky TV.

Elsewhere in the Championship, James Scowcroft got the winner for Crystal Palace on his league debut. The former Coventry City midfielder who joined Palace for £500k scored in a 2-1 win at his former club Ipswich Town.

There were wins for Cardiff,Birmingham City,Burnley,Leeds,Southend and West Brom with the games at Plymouth and Preston both ending in draws.
Richard Shaw made his Millwall league debut in the 1-1 draw with Yeovil. The veteran defender played the whole game and was one of seven new signings in the Lions side.

Playing their first game in the Football League for the first time in over forty fours years, Accrington Stanley were beaten 2-0 at Chester City.

Locally, Rugby Town,who play a Coventry City X1 on Tuesday night were thrashed 6-1 at home by Rushden & Diamonds X1, Nuneaton Borough drew 3-3 at Tamworth,Atherstone Town drew 0-0 with Bedworth United whilst Leamington FC had an excellent 6-1 win at Solihull Borough with former Sky Blues Ben Mackey and Dave Pearson netting for Jason Cadden's side.

Midland Football Alliance side Quorn have signed two former City players. Robert Betts signed for Marcus Law on Thursday night as did Adam Layfield, the Coventry born left back had just broken into City's reserve side before he fractured his ankle playing for City U18's against Millwall last March and was subsequently released.

Betts played in a 2-2 draw against Midland Combination Premier Division Coventry Sphinx this afternoon. Quorn, at their plush home Sutton Park home, took a 31st minute lead through Evans bundling the ball over the line. But Sphinx, who have signed Avun Jephcott and fielded Tim Partridge, equalised in the 49th minute when second half sub Wayne Pulford tapped home from a Mark Owen cross.

With seven to go,Quorn thought they had sealed a victory when Dave Wigley stabbed home from a corner. Back came a well organised Sphinx side and with just over a minute of the match left, Craig Martin got down the right and crossed for Pulford who got a touch to steer the ball off Robert Betts and into the net.

Coventry Sphinx Reserves drew 0-0 with Warwick Town. The match saw Sphinx assistant manager John Woodward celebrate his 44th birthday by coming on as a second half substitute and nearly snatching a victory.

Sunderland have revealed that they have failed in a bid to sign on loan Spurs duo Calum Davenport and Andy Reid.
James Quinn has joined Northampton Town from Peterborough United and signed a two year deal.
