Elsewhere, it was Endsleigh Challenge Cup Day. For Coventry Sphinx, this competition is tinged with sorrow. It was five years ago this weekend that Sphinx had their manager Willie Knibbs killed in a horrific car crash.

A minute silence were observed by the players and crowd before the Third Round game with Brocton. With Sphinx boss Paul Charnley away, Willie Knibbs son Lee took the team for the game whilst his brother Adam started at left back.

Sphinx were ahead in the tenth minute when a lovely run by John Woodhouse saw him ghost past five opponents before finding Mark Owen who cooly finished. The Sphinx Drive side whose youth team face Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night in an FA Youth Cup 1st Round tie went further ahead when Carl Winterbottom headed in from a corner on the stroke of half-time.

Both sides battled during the second half and in the 86th minute and following the substution of an injured assistant referee, Adam Knibbs who had a fine game, worked well to lash the ball into the net from the edge of the area.

Brocton made a late fight of it with a lob from Darren Gardiner in the 88th minute and an Adam Lane strike in the third minute of stoppage time but Sphinx held on to a 3-2 win with a performance that their late manager would have appreciated.

Elsewhere,Sphinx Reserves won 1-0 at Coton Green but Stockingford lost a Division 1 game with a 2-1 home defeat by Fairfield Villa.
