Gary McSheffrey made his debut for Birmingham City at home to Crystal Palace. The former City striker failed to score in a 2-1 win for Steve Bruce's side.

Elsewhere in the division, there were wins for Cardiff (Wilo Flood with the only goal at Leeds),West Brom,Wolves,Southend and Sheffield Wednesday. The matches at Preston,Barnsley,Ipswich,Derby and Luton all ended in draws. The results mean that Coventry City are 20th in the table.

Andy Morrell made his Blackpool debut but like McSheffrey,failed to score in a 4-2 win at Bristol City and was replaced five minutes from time. Richard Shaw played the whole game in Millwall's first win of the season under Nigel; Spackman. The Lions beat Oldham Athletic who brought on former Sky Blue Neil Wood as a late sub 1-0.

Elsewhere in League One, Eddy Johnson scored twice for Bradford City in a 3-0 win at his former club Crewe Alexandra.

Hartlepool United have signed Willie Boland. The midfielder was released by Cardiff City at the end of last season and had trials with Swansea and Grimsby Town. Boland did not feature in Hartlepool's 1-1 draw at Torquay.

Locally, Nuneaton Borough were beaten 4-2 in a Conference North fixture at Droylesden, Rugby Town won 1-0 at Merthyr but Bedworth United lost 3-1 at Berkhampstead.

In the Midland Alliance, Leamington won 2-0 at Causeway United with Jon Adams and Andy Greogry scoring. Stratford Town lost 1-0 at home to Tipton Town.

The two other sides with CV postcodes in the Alliance were in FA Cup Preliminary Round action. Atherstone Town beat Carlton Town 3-2 whilst Racing Club Warwick live to fight another day with a 2-2 draw at Ford Sports (Daventry).

Coventry Sphinx top the Midland Combination Premier Division after the opening game. Paul Charnley's side won 4-1 at Brocton. Covsupport sponsored Danny McSheffrey scored as did Wayne Pulford whilst Robbie Stevenson added a brace.

Elsewhere, Alveston drew 2-2 at Bolehall,Coventry Copsewood drew 0-0 at Meir KA, Nuneaton Griff drew 1-1 at Pershore Town but Southam United lost 3-0 at home to Walsall Wood.

In the First Division, Stockingford were thrashed 5-0 at Bartley Green whilst Kenilworth Town and Leamington Hibernian both lost 3-2.
