Former Coventry City forward Robbie Simpson has been released by Oldham Athletic.

Simpson had come to the end of a one year deal and had been allowed to leave Boundary Park along with Dean Bouzanis, Liam Jacob, Connor Hughes and Daniel Taylor.

Oldham boss Lee Johnson told his club's website: "Robbie has been fantastic during the short time I have been here.

"I like him as a person and he gave everything whether in a match or on the training pitch.

"It is a measure of how highly I regard Robbie that I made him captain when James Wesolowski was ruled out.

"And as I have mentioned before, if you were in the trenches, Robbie is the sort of character you would like alongside you."

Simpson tweeted: 2Thanks for the love people! Great memories #anfield #forestaway #bphattrick #cleansheet #captain big thanks to everyone at #oafc  Too many to single out! Time for me to move on but will always keep a look out for #latics scores and wish the club luck!"
