Peter Reid has apologised on behalf of Steve Staunton for an obscenity he uttered during City's 4-1 defeat at QPR.

Speaking to the Coventry Evening Telegraph, Reid said: "I wasn't aware of that situation but players shouldn't react to fans in any way. You want the supporters to support you, but they pay their money to criticise as well and as professionals we've got to accept that. "If the fans were let down in any way, I'd just like to apologise to them. "I can tell my players how to react but you can't tell supporters - as long as it's not offensive, it's their right to criticise.

"We've got to get results. "I know that and the players know that. The fans will obviously be frustrated at the moment but we need them to get behind us, which I'm sure they will do. "The good thing about it is that we've got a game against a very good side and that's an ideal chance to get back into the swing of things.

"We want to go out, put on a decent display and get a result for the supporters and ourselves. "Some times you look at players and think they haven't worked hard enough, but I can't say that with any of my squad. "All you can ask is to give you everything they've got, and they are doing that. Some times it's good enough, some times it isn't, but they are trying their best."

Tim Sherwood who like Staunton has come in for heavy criticism said: "Commitment is something that should be taken for granted among the players and I think that everybody out there is fully committed to the cause.

"We've got a manager here who's been brought up on 100-per-cent effort and he wouldn't allow anyone to fall short of that. "It's harder to come and play at home when things aren't going well because we know how edgy the supporters have been. "We didn't play very well against West Ham but we won the game, so everybody's smiling. Our best performance of the season was against Gillingham and we got booed off the field.

"We understand that. They pay their money, and they're entitled to their opinion. It's natural and we've got to be big enough to take it - they've booed better players than us before. " Without a doubt - fans reaction can get to you. "It's not at that stage at the moment, but you can just sense it creeping in. And if it does go overboard then it destroys younger players."
