Ranson On The FA Cup

Coventry City Ray Ranson has been talking about the FA Cup.

Speaking to the club's e-zine, Mr Ranson said: "Like everyone else at the football club, I am looking forward to Saturday's FA Cup tie against in Blackburn.

With my tongue firmly in my cheek, I could say we go there looking to make it two wins in two seasons after the great result last year.

But, on a serious note, we have the utmost of respect for Blackburn Rovers and I know Sam Allardyce has a very well-organised side there.

Now I'm a chairman, people often ask me if my view of the FA Cup has changed. Do I now view ties as potential money-spinners for the club?

Naturally, we are looking to generate revenue in every way we can but for me the romance of the FA Cup is still much more special than the money you make from progressing.

When supporters in this city look back at the victory in 1987, they are not thinking of the money the club made but the pride and delight it generated.

I suppose because I was a player, I remember at the bittersweet memories the FA Cup generated for me and I am sure Chris Coleman would say the same.

I was lucky, in that, I made it to the final in 1981 with Manchester City and we drew the first match so it went to replay.

As it was the centenary year of the competition, they didn't want to play the replay away from Wembley - as they had done in previous seasons - so I got two bites at playing at the famous stadium.

I also suffered a famous shock at Manchester City when we were knocked out by Halifax who were, at that time, bottom of the old Fourth Division!

So for me, the FA Cup will always remain a magical competition and I wish our lads and all the supporters travelling up to Ewood Park the very best for Saturday's game.
