Coventry Sphinx failed to stop Quorn closing in on Midland Alliance League leaders Highgate United after going down to a 2-0 defeat.

Sphinx boss Luke Hopkins was able to field Ashley Cain, now back at the club after a brief spell at Barwell for their first game in 2014 and they took on a Quorn side, who were second in the table and were one of the pre-season favourites for promotion after moving into the Alliance, in a game in which great credit goes to the ground-staff at the Sphinx for getting the game on.

Quorn had the very strong winds with them in the first half and forced two early corners before Aden Moore was not far wide from a tenth minute free kick for Sphinx, who were wearing their red away kit which is sponsored by the Keep Cov In Cov campaign group.

In the 26th minute, Quorn surged down the right through Karl Whymark and he got in a shot which was superbly pushed away by Keeper Carl O’Neill with his right hand.

The visitors attacked five minutes later and won a corner. Whymark delivered the flag kick and the ball fell for Dan Henton some twenty yards out to lash high into the net.

Turner curled wide following a corner four minutes into the second half before Sphinx who put in plenty of effort won a 59th minute free kick This was delivered by Ashley Cain and was met by Matty Fowler. The ball struck Pearson’s right hand post and bounced across the goal where Aden Moore put it wide.

In in the 67th minute, the visitors chalked up another victory when they were awarded a corner and from Whymark’s flag kick, Dominic Grennan volleyed home from close range.

Grennan fired across the goal and Cain had a free kick headed wide as both sides used their full allocation of substitutes.

With three minutes left, Sphinx won two corners but the grandstand finish the Sphinx support were hoping for, failed to materialise and Luke Hopkins side were left to rue not taking what few chances they had.
