The 38 year old Welshman has managed at Fulham and Real Sociedad and has played for Man City Youth,Swansea, Crystal Palace,Blackburn and Fulham before a car crash ended his career.
Coleman, who replaces Iain Dowie, has agreed a three and a half year year deal and will be the eighth manager since relegation from the Premier League.
