Coventry City manager Steven Pressley has said that he is pleased with the Sky Blues back to back wins against Stevenage and Crewe Alexandra.

“Winning always breeds confidence,” Pressley said to the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner, “and looking at our performance at the weekend it certainly wasn’t typical of us this season but what was pleasing was the phenomenal work-rate of the players and their desire to win the game. I was exceptionally proud of that.

“The thing moving forward, although it will not be immediate, is we have to get a greater combination of the two aspects which are the real determination and desire not to lose goals combined with our pressing and football philosophy because that is how we will improve as a team.

“In the last couple of games we have managed to show that grit and determination we’ve been crying out for at the cost, a little bit, of our football philosophy, but we have won the two games.

“Our mentality has been much changed and I have been really pleased with the response of the players, but it’s certainly not job done yet. We have seven games to go and we’re determined to take as many points from those games as we can.

“I watched the last 20 minutes again and a lot of things I pride my team on in terms of our shape, discipline and organisation were poor. But we made up for that with sheer endeavour and commitment not to lose the game. And that really pleased me.

“They didn’t pass the ball as freely as I’d have liked but their mindset was a real winning one and it’s about being able to combine the two moving forward.”

He added: “I have never compromised and I will never ask my football team, ever, to play long ball. I might ask them to play a long pass, absolutely, because they can be very effective but certainly not hopeful long balls will never be encouraged by my teams.

“One of the things we have to improve on is standing up to the game, and we’ve done that in the last two.”
