Pressley Looking To Improve Defending From Set Plays

Coventry City manager Steven Pressley wants to improve his side's defending from set plays.

Pressley said to the Coventry Telegraph's Alan Poole:  “Far too often this season it’s been our Achilles heel. We have conceded an average number of goals from open play but we’ve conceded more than any other teams from set pieces – significantly more.

“Your Wolves and your Brentfords are very strong on set-plays; that’s why they are where they are and that’s what we’ve got to aim for.

“In the early part of the season it didn’t matter that much because we were scoring so prolifically but it’s a different story when games are as tight as they have been in recent weeks.

"The difference between us winning and losing at Peterborough was one corner kick and it was a similar story against MK Dons the previous week when we dominated the second half and created some good chances but again a goal from a set piece cost us a positive result.

“We work on it in the training ground every day but ultimately I think it comes down to how much we want to win the first header or the second phase.

“I’ve stressed to the players that part of their development is taking responsibility for key moments. Their mentality has got to be ‘it’s me against my opponent and there’s no way he’s going to score’ because you can’t look to other people to do your job for you.

“I want to see an improvement on that over the last four games and it’s something I’ll be looking to address and rectify for next season.”
