Pressley Hoping That Youngsters Can Do The Job

Coventry City manager Steven Pressley is hoping that his young players can shine this week.

City travel to Halesowen Town tonight in a Birmingham Senior Cup tie and face Crystal Palace in an U21 game tomorrow afternoon at the Ricoh Arena and the Sky Blues will be fielding two teams which will be a mix of youngsters with fringe players thrown in to boost the numbers.

Speaking about the players he is planning to use in both matches, Pressley told the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner: “A high percentage of our Under-18s will be playing, linked in with some of our slightly senior players; the likes of Adam Barton, Billy Daniels and Aaron Phillips and it will be a similar situation on Wednesday when our Under-21s play.

“It’s a nice test for the 18s. I continually talk about challenging the group and that’s huge in the development of young players. And playing in this type of competition will give them exposure to real men’s football and that’s really the only way you learn.

“It will be a different type of football to what they’re used to which is very much based around pure football, but this will be lower league football which will be a very good grounding for them.

“It’s also an opportunity to give a bit of game time to players who haven’t featured and they will provide a bit of experience to the young boys, although Billy and Aaron are still very young themselves, but with slightly older heads. But this is a great way to continuously develop our young players.”
